A herniated disc occurs when the disc, the jelly-like cushion between the vertebrae of the spine, degenerates and leaks. The part of the disc that pushes outward can then irritate nearby nerves, causing pain. So, do you have a herniated disc? Here are the symptoms:
- Weakness in one leg or one arm
- Tingling or numbness in one leg or buttock
- A burning pain centered in the neck
- Loss of bladder or bowel control
- Muscle weakness
Causes
Herniated discs have been linked to:
- Improper lifting techniques
- Excess body weight, which places extra stress on the discs
- Sudden pressure
- Repetitive strenuous activities
Diagnosis
If your physician suspects that your symptoms are related to a herniated disc, an x-ray of the spine may be ordered to check for changes. An MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) is another probable diagnostic tool for herniated discs.
Treatment
Most patients don't need surgical intervention for herniated disc, though it can be necessary if a portion of the disc gets stuck in the spinal canal causing loss of function. Treatment often involves:
- Over-the-counter pain relievers and rest
- Prescribed muscle relaxers
- Anti-inflammatory drugs
- Cold compresses
